Sharp Curiosity Reading Academy is a project of Diana Sharp Consulting, a company for educational pioneers founded in 2003 by Diana Sharp, Ph.D. Diana is a mom and a cognitive psychologist who spent 13 years as an educational researcher, specializing in children's literacy at Vanderbilt's Learning Technology Center. She began pondering the creation of the Reading Machine in 2003 and had to wait for technology to catch up. Sean Brophy, Ph.D., is an engineer and a learning scientist, and he collaborated with Diana on the design of early prototypes for the Reading Machine, some of which required hiding a laptop computer under the table to make a 2003 Palm Pilot pretend it could do what an iPod touch can now do solo. He is now an Associate Professor at Purdue University. Dave Hersey is a former Apple senior software engineer and the owner of Paracoders, Inc., a New Hampshire based corporation that provides custom software development. He began working with Diana on the Reading Machine in 2009. His deep knowledge of Apple software systems and their continuing evolution have been invaluable in enabling the Reading Machine to stay on the leading edge of what the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad can offer to support beginning and struggling readers.
